The Facebook saga….

Adam Sorkin, who wrote West Wing and Studio 60, is going to write a story about Facebook. Yes, that Facebook.
I have no idea how to respond to this.

Nvidia and smartphones

Nvidia moving into the smartphone as the ‘central platform of the future.’ This is same tired drivel the semiconductor companies have been peddling for years. We’ll see. The best (worst) quote from the CEO:
“We think that computing needs to be far better on mobile devices,” Huang said. “Today’s devices are phone first, computing second. We think they need to be computing first, phone second.”
That’s dangerous mojo. Trying to reshape people’s usage and expectation about their devices is dangerous business. Think Newton.

Link: Google Cuts Features Out of ‘Android’ OS
I’m very familiar with the mobile phone market. I’m a fan of Google’s Android. But this article is one of my favorites. Why? Because the developer comes right out and tells the truth:
“the reason is that we plain ran out of time,”
How refreshing to see a company admit this. Most companies who develop software are routinely late. Many delay, many make excuses, but very few tell the truth.
Good for you, Google.

Amazon buys a social group

Amazon.com to Buy Social Network for Book Lovers
Amazon buys Shelfari, a social networking site for book lovers. This is a very interesting move for Amazon and makes sense on the surface. The results will lay in the execution. There’s no doubt that Amazon can immediately infuse Shelfari with additional tech features by integration into Amazon’s massive database, recommendation engines, and intelligence algorithms. The issue comes with the management of the group.
A social networking group can take on some pretty nasty anti-capitalistic tendencies. Some of the social networking groups out there are very anti-marketing, anti-ads, and anti-commercial. Additionally, some of the most vocal guys in the groups are a royal pain in the backside. These trolls can poison the entire community in short order. For Amazon to be successful at this, they’ll need to put the right folks at the management level. Namely, someone who can foster and coddle the community without losing sight of the fact that corporations need to make money.

AT&T has new data plan for iPhone
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
The pricing seems a little steep to me, but that’s not the point. This announcement is going to start a cycle of pricing step-downs, as each of the big carriers try to keep their existing customers from moving to the iPhone. The other carriers will start to introduce their own plans – at lower prices – which will, in turn, prompt AT&T to come out with a brand new plan at a lower price.
What’s the end game? The industry continue their ridiculous, non-innovative strategy of competing on pricing, thus forcing themselves into commodity sales. However, there is a side-effect. This strategy is a flanking attack on the cable companies. Soon, consumers will tire of the shoddy cable co. service and just stick an EDGE (or whatever new protocol is used…) card into their laptop rather than having DSL or cable.
It’s going to happen. Watch for it.

Apple and e-books
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Should Apple make an e-book? The article here presents a compelling argument, but the root of the problem lies not in technology, but in human behavior. Most people don’t read. An argument could be made that iPhone owners represent a greater number of readers than the general population. I can buy that logic. So, maybe you’ll get a few extra folks by creating a market for ebooks on the iPhone. But having 5 customers instead of 1 still isn’t a great business.
What’s a better idea? Take that money and invest it into audible.com to fund more books on audio. I believe more folks will listen to someone than they would read someone’s writing.

Google opens up Ad Manager to all
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
Google’s product Ad Manager, which was in limited release, has been open to all businesses. It is seen as a competitor to OpenX.
TechCrunch seems to think that OpenX will be an acquisition target. You think? With the frenzy that MSFT has been going through to try and play catch-up with GOOG, I wouldn’t be surprised if OpenX has already started due diligence.
