Ravi Nagarajan submits: Barron’s published an interesting article this weekend by Jonathan A. Knee, director of the Media Program at Columbia Business School and co-author of The Curse of the Mogul . (Note: Mr. Knee’s co-author for the book is Bruce Greenwald who has been discussed here in the past.) Mr. Knee’s article pertains directly to a topic that appeared here in May regarding newspapers and “creative destruction” . Mr. Knee’s article in Barron’s is entitled “This Dying Medium Has Plenty of Life”.

So much creative destruction to document, so little time. Much will be revealed this week in the Aussie market, although a lot will probably remain obscure too. Producer price data for the September quarter comes out from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Inflation anyone? Maybe not in wages. But certainly in raw materials (energy). And speaking of inflation, the Housing Industry Association will report new homes sales data for September later this week too.

Cory Doctorow. Makers (Tor, 2009). The major themes I’ve written about here lately — the decline of traditional mass-production industry, the crisis of value and shift of production outside the cash nexus, the rise of micromanufacturing (see “ The Homebrew Industrial Revolution “), the digital/network culture — are all central to Makers . And given my research and writing interests, it’s a foregone conclusion that any work of cyberpunk or other near-future sci fi is going to wind up marked and dogeared beyond belief. Just about anything I’ve read by Neal Stephenson or William Gibson has ended up that way, as did the machine shop material in the first volume of S.

Nobody can predict the future. But I have a hunch, so I might as well share it.I believe the United States economy has been so hollowed out that we will not return to the prosperity we were accustomed to in the latter part of the 20th Century. There is no economic foundation on which to build. For more analysis and explanation of the economic decay, see Jon Taplin’s Blog. The American industrial base has been eroding for four decades. There is almost no industrial base left.

Zero Hedge Have you ever taken the time to talk to someone who was old enough to remember the Great Depression? My guess is that you would inevitably find that his or her views on the economy, the role of government and the financial markets were meaningfully different from those of a person who came of age during 1960s or 1990s, for example. Specifically, since many of these perspectives were indelibly shaped by the traumatic circumstances of that period, people who lived through the Depression often tend to be more conservative in nature.

tedr : bijan : Much has been said about the issues facing publishers and advertisers particularly when it comes to branded advertising. My head always hurts when I hear people say that at least with television, brands can safely advertise their brands. Yes, television has been a success story when it comes to branded advertising. The dollars are big. Forget big, they are enormous. But I’m convinced that it’s a fragile business. First, it’s not growing. And our attention is shifting.

China has for several years been heralded by western business leaders as ‘the place to be’. Yet despite the widespread excitement, the business successes of foreign companies operating and investing there have been limited, both in terms of quantity and in terms of magnitude. This week’s edition of The Economist , however, draws attention to the recent stellar performance of Israeli-Chinese venture firm Infinity in addressing the Chinese opportunity via its Infinity I-China fund.

This is a quick follow-up to a prior post, “ Another One Bites the Dust: Readers Digest In Bankruptcy .” It now appears that Fortune Magazine has come under severe financial distress. Consider this recent headline: “ Fortune Magazine To Sharply Cut Publishing Frequency .” First Portfolio, the business magazine launched just two years ago by publishing giant Conde Nast, folded. Then, the largest business magazine in America, BusinessWeek, was sold by its parent company, McGraw-Hill (MHP), to Bloomberg for as little as $3 million plus its subscription liabilities.

“If there is one story that has been largely missed despite the extensive media coverage of Israel, it is that key economic metrics demonstrate that Israel represents the greatest concentration of innovation and entrepreneurship in the world today.” That is the central thesis of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle , by Dan Senor and Saul Singer, out this week.

We are having our 4th and most likely our last after work networking event of the year. So we are going out with a bang by presenting two incredible opportunities for one deserving social entrepreneur: free office and meeting space in Östermalm and a day of sales & venture capital coaching; 8 hours + 2 follow up coaching calls (1 hour). What makes this opportunity even better is that the office space is at The Hub Stockholm, worth between 13,800 to 16,800 SEK; and the coaching is from the experts at Startup Sales Systems worth 40,000 SEK.

Posted by Avashya – India Web 2.0 News on Oct 26, 2009 in Digital Media News | Subscribe Just landed on an interesting perspective (based on facts) about how Israeli startups aren’t doing very well in the last 4 years from 2006. From the original post In 2006, 2007 and 2008 there have been very few “exits”. 2009 is not much better. These are sales of companies or initial public offerings in the stock market. Exit(s) is a buzz word in the Israeli start-up sector.

There are a considerable number of coaching resources on how to make your pitch, whether to an individual or to a large group. The purpose of this post is to start a conversation on where to pitch. One experienced VC commented to me at a recent large event: “anyone presenting here is probably over-shopped already and hasn’t been able to find money.” This particular person is not based in the city where this event was held, but he makes it his business to work the market and know what deals are coming available.

My coverage has been pretty nonstop conference-related for the past week and a half or so. I’ve been going back through the Reader to see what I’ve missed. The Web 2.0 conference has generated a huge amount of conversation in the tech space. On the nonprofit side of things, there were a lot of great posts this past week. Here are some of my favorites: Are Markets Moral?: Social Earth contributor Mike Shoemaker writes a very thoughtful piece about the formation of collective narratives and the shifting conversation about business.

A little while back one of the entrepreneurial leaders in our local community, Jared Goralnick , put on a great day conference at the University of Maryland that imparted some great wisdom on local budding entrepreneurs. It was a good day with lots of new people and great advice. Now round 2. This week Jared is putting on the follow up to the first event. Unlike the full day conference style, this one is an evening event with some great panels and panelists.

Perpetual Protection of Traditional Knowledge “Not On Table” at WIPO IP Watch , 22 October 2009 GENEVA, SWITZERLAND: Protection of traditional knowledge under intellectual property rights may have a time limit, though determining duration of protection measures will be more difficult than it is with Western scientific innovation, World Intellectual Property Organization Director General Francis Gurry said. “I think perpetual protection is not on the table,” Gurry told journalists on 21 October.

Did you know however that innovations in sound can also mean deceptive simplicity in superbly executed designs? True. It is actually possible. A recent entry for the design boom sound innovation competition has shown just that.

From David Altig , via Mark Thoma . This statistic, the percentage of job losses that are permanent, is a useful way to distinguish Keynesian recessions from Recalculations. In a Keynesian recession, you are temporarily laid off because of excess inventories and deficient aggregate demand. You wait to be recalled by your firm. This was true of recessions from the end of the second World War through the 1980 recession.

…the iceman cometh but there was no celebration…looked like someone already took the punchbowl away. While the major indices remain above their 40/50 day moving averages, a lot of individual stocks are now straddling them…that can’t be good, can it? Economists and policy makers agree that a major contributing factor to Japan’s 10-year “Heisei Malaise” was the prevalence of “zombie finance”, where Japanese banks continued to provide support for highly inefficient, debt-ridden companies, commonly referred as zombie companies, and the government effectively allowed the banks to simply ignore their festering bad loans with lax accounting practices, including the absence of mark-to-market.

If you’re an entrepreneur launching a start-up, there are plenty of places online to find advice – some good, some bad. Given this plethora of information, can a book about starting your own web startup still provide value in 2009? If that book is “The Web Startup Success Guide,” the answer is a resounding yes. Despite all the information scattered around the Internet, Bob Walsh’s new book presents a more coherent story, from start to finish.

Now that Windows 7 is being met with mostly positive reviews and green-lighting by software professionals, no doubt many will be making the switch to Microsoft’s new operating system in the next couple of weeks. Which is a bit of a pain if you stuck with Windows XP and skipped Vista altogether, because then the best thing for you to do is perform a complete clean install after backing up your data and programs. Wiping out your data is one thing, but you’ll also need to install all your applications from scratch again once you get Windows 7 up and running on your computer.

One of my goals with One Day, One Job is to get more interactive. I’d like to get more feedback from you, the readers, on what you want to see, and I’d also like to use the collective wisdom of thousands of college aged job seekers to develop better content. The best way to do that is through reader surveys, which is why I recently signed up with SurveyMonkey . They’re a Menlo Park, CA (formerly Portland, OR) based “startup” that has been helping people run online surveys for the last decade.

Today’s poor growth figures for the UK throw something rather stark into relief. Those countries that have spent the last decade claiming that financial innovation, low tax, ultra-flexible labour markets, laissez faire industrial policy and popular asset ownership have driven their “economic miracle” are now not only the source of the world’s economic troubles but are actually lagging behind those countries which remained more sceptical of the whole approach.

There’s a story about the demise of Facebook in the Washington Post: Worldwide ebb for Facebook. I like the logic–when a company’s been around long enough for someone to make a movie out of it, then it’s probably on the downhill slide, even if they do get Justin Timberlake. That people are interested in something new shouldn’t be surprising to anyone in business, marketing or evolutionary psychology. Same ol’, same ol’ won’t cut it, especially in a world where expectations about the speed of change have reached new highs.

On the basis of a completely non-scientific survey, it appears to me that Microsoft’s relatively new search engine Bing is doing a better job at finding stuff than Google. Just a short while ago Google would find posts to blogs or small web sites within hours of their appearance. Now it seems to take the Goliath of search a week to find posts from small sites. Why this is happening, assuming my impression is right, is hard to know. It may be that Google’s parabola from birth to death will turn out to be very rapid.

Obama’s career up to now, lucky as it was, had been wanting in singular achievements for which he alone was responsible. His experience seems not to have taught him the law of natural selection in politics by which majorities are put together out of remainders. Any act that achieves something concrete will leave small multitudes of the disappointed keening but unheard. There are hurt feelings in politics, which only time can cure if anything can.

In memoriam… Economist Joseph Schumpeter is famous for popularizing the term, “Creative Destruction” to talk about the way economic progress relentlessly grinds down the old to make way for the new in a never-ending cycle of “reinvent yourself or die”. For instance, buggy whip companies were driven out of business by Henry Ford’s horseless carriages which, being horseless, did not not need to be whipped quite as often. (They also pooped less).

Fahey has a very interesting editorial up on GamesIndustry.biz. Fahey separates the “Game Industry” from the gamers, of the industry and the customer-base. Why we do not hear more talk about the customer-base and where they are headed in ‘business discussions’ about the “Game Industry” has always astonished me. Customers are the reasons why businesses exist, businesses do not exist because of “business models” and “marketing strategies”.

I’m still not sure if the Twitter stream is the right place to be for advertising, but with the way the company set out to make it easy for developers to build upon their platform with open APIs, it’s no wonder so many ad networks have sprung up since it got started. Its massive growth and the fact that the San Francisco startup is a media and celebrity darling probably helped in that regard, too.

Contrary to what you may have heard elsewhere, venture capital investment is still growing, at least according to the latest MoneyTree report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association. Yes, that’s pretty much the exact opposite of what Dow Jones VentureSource concluded last week — that a potential VC rebound had stalled.

Kosmix , the reference engine that dynamically generates comprehensive topic pages as soon as you search for them, has just acquired a small startup called Cruxlux . Cruxlux has spent the last two years building an engine that can take any two people, places, or things and tell you how they’re related. I’ll be live blogging the AlwaysOn OnDC Summit for the next 2 1/2 days. Tony Perkins, founder of the Churchill Club, Upside Magazine, Red Herring, and Always On took the stage to welcome the attendees. Tony is telling how he grew up in Portola Valley not far from where the Home Brew Computer Club met. He showed a picture of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak before they were 20. Tony recently read Barack Obama’s innovation policy and it sounded like a poetic version of what he stands for — promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

F or the last two weeks, I’ve been mulling this concept of market correction as it pertains to the web. There are a variety of stories that have been related, in addition to signatory bubble characteristics that I have observed for some time, but it’s all coming into a lot more focus as time has gone on. A market correction is an economic term describes a natural occurrence when a certain market sector becomes “over sold” or hyperinflated, or when a sector becomes irrelevant to the market and is put out of its misery, or re-capitalized.

Breaking news….If you are a startup pursuing funding, you have more in common with a politician or athlete caught behaving badly then you might think. A politician caught misbehaving, an athlete photographed doing something he or she shouldn’t be doing, or a celebrity who finds that one heated moment has turned into tabloid fodder for weeks on end all have one thing in common – how they communicate will likely determine whether the incident is a speed bump or a career ender.

Recently, several utilities and corporations—“ Apple, Exelon, PNM Resources, Pacific Gas and Electric and Levi Strauss & Co ” —departed from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a business-lobbying organization, over the Chamber’s views over greenhouse-gas regulation. Particularly, the Chamber “ is calling greenhouse-gas regulation ‘a job killer’ that would ‘completely shut the country down’ and ‘virtually destroy the United States,’ [although] . . .

YouTube announced this week that it’s launching a real-time search engine for video comments. Or, as I’m calling it, the worst idea of the week (and, as that post points out, this is Balloon Boy week… so that’s really saying something). YouTube is likely looking for a way to keep up with the buzzwordiest term of the month, “Real-Time”, and while it already has features to let you see new videos in real-time, giving its users the ability to search through recent comments as soon as they are posted might have been the next logical step.

side note: Thank you Newsweek for saying what most of the new media has been saying for a long time….FOX news is un-American! They promote hate, racism and just plain anger people for the sake of ratings….which in their world equates to advertising revenue. It’s sad when I see that FOX dominates the news ratings…..it shows you why that moron dubya was elected twice, and why that other dimwit Palin almost ended up as our VP! By Jacob Weisberg NEWSWEEK Fox News isn’t just bad. It’s un-American.

Many tech transfer offices are stuck in reactive mode. They dutifully receive invention disclosures from faculty, assess them for commercial potential, file patents and provisionals, and seek licensees. This reactive strategy, while understandable given staff shortages and time constraints, does not even attempt to address one very critical factor in successful research commercialization efforts: what does the market want? Recognizing this, a growing number of TTOs have moved away from traditional and reactive “market push” strategies toward a more proactive “market pull” approach.

With all of the recent articles and conversation surrounding the browser ballot screen that may come to fruition for Windows 7 versions shipped in Europe, It had me thinking of which browser I would select had my version of Windows 7 shipped with a selection screen. Typically, I end up defaulting to Internet Explorer 8 because it’s pre-installed and because it’s the browser that I need to use all day at work because of compatibility reasons.

An excerpt of the ‘findings’ from an impossibly long report from the Columbia School Of Journalism : The Reconstruction of American Journalism By Leonard Downie Jr. and Michael Schudson October 19, 2009 … What needs to be done to support independent news reporting? We are not recommending a government bailout of newspapers, nor any of the various direct subsidies that governments give newspapers in many European countries, although those subsidies have not had a noticeably chilling effect on newspapers’ willingness to print criticism of those governments.

Simon JohnsonLast week we solicited questions for Simon Johnson, the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund and a contributor to Economix. His second batch of responses is below. The first batch is here.Q.What governmental policies should the United States adopt to reinvigorate its manufacturing base and spur increased innovation in this country? — Tom KrebsbachA.Tom, the major danger faced by our manufacturing base is that we’ll have another major financial crisis, further disrupting the flow of credit and leading – one way or another – to higher taxes on entrepreneurs and workers.

The Daily Reckoning Everyone and everything is getting higher and higher. Led by the investment banks, U.S. stocks are reporting earnings that “beat analyst’s expectations.” The Dow is over 10,000 again. Even oil is trading at $75. Keep in mind most of the earnings news is garbage. Earnings are whatever an accountant wants them to be. Compared to last year – which was a shocker – this year’s earnings are bound to be better.
